母亲望子成龙，盼子能出人头地，功成名就，跻身上流社会，摆脱贫穷，日进斗金；儿子却想坚持写作理想，放弃教师职位和诱人薪金。面对母亲的期许和自身的理想之间的矛盾，儿子最终选择了后者。世界上最快乐的事莫过于为理想而奋斗，劳伦斯在《出人头地》一文中记叙了自己如何坚持理想，并用自己的方式“出人头地”，同时作者也表达了自己对母亲所怀有的复杂感情。
