这部十九世纪初期的英国文学经典里的某些篇章，竟同布迪厄的看法不谋而合，这为我们在不同的时代和民族背景下验证布氏理论的“普适性”提供了有趣的案例。本书选录了《伊利亚随笔》中的主要作品，包括《南海公司回忆》,《除夕随想》等诸多名篇。著名翻译家刘炳善先生的译文精到而隽永，恰到好处地传达了兰姆独树一帜的文字魅力。本书所配的二十多幅插图，出自英国著名画家谢帕德(Ernest H．shepard)手笔，极具收臧价值。
《伊利亚随笔》荟萃了英国著名作家查尔斯·兰姆(Carles Lamb，1775～1834)最出色的随笔作品，堪称十九世纪英国文学的瑰宝。在这些随笔中，兰姆以“伊利亚”为笔名，从日常作息，家长里短切人，将平生感念娓娓道来；随笔主题既与兰姆本人的独特经历水乳交融，又浸淫于广阔深挚的人道主义氛围；文风含蓄迂回之余，亦不失情真意切，纤毫毕现地展示了英式随笔的至高境界。正如三十年代我国作家梁遇春所言：对丁心灵的创伤，兰姆是一剂“止血的良药”。
