The term "Five Elements" has three different meanings. Firstly, it refers to the five most fundamental things or the five elements that make up all things. The "Book of History - Great Norm" first clearly defined the contents of the "Five Elements", namely metal, wood, water, fire and earth. These five things or elements have their own attributes and there are mutual generating and restricting relationships among them. Secondly, the "Five Elements" are further abstracted into the basic framework for understanding all things and the world. All things can be incorporated into the category of the "Five Elements" and thus are endowed with different properties. Thirdly, it refers to five moral behaviors. Xunzi once accused Zisi and Mencius of "creating theories based on old sayings and calling them the 'Five Elements'.
