Jane's unhappy childhood mistreated by the Reeds and hardened by Lowood's hardships cultivated her strong dignity, rebelliousness against injustice, independence and resilience. She strove for economic self-sufficiency as a governess, insisted on equal partnership in love with Rochester, refused loveless utilitarian marriage with St. John, and endured all hardships to finally gain a mutually respectful happy marriage with Rochester.
