Heathcliff's change is not only a reaction to Catherine's betrayal of love, but also a product of circumstances, after all, this dark and malevolent man was not so from the beginning. It was Heathcliff who 'instinctively' caught little Hatton as he wristed from his father's arms and fell downstairs. His frenzied revenge may be seen as a counterattack to the contempt he had received for his poverty, but it was too violent a counterattack, and destroyed both the enemies and himself. Fortunately, when it was all over, he "forgave" his enemies' children so that they could live normal and happy lives. This echo of heathcliff's rare kindness before, is the author's arrangement of beginning to end, reflecting the author's hope of a flower blossoming out of the darkness.
