    Miss Martha, the first hero of the story, is also o Henry's vivid character. The story opens by pointing out her advantages over others. She had savings, false teeth, compassion, and though others were far less well off than she was, she was one at forty who was not favored by the god of love. But Miss Martha herself did not seem to be aware of this. So she began to dream of the painter she judged to be very poor. There are many details, especially of Miss Martha's mind.
