Tess's sorrow was preordained; she was a fatalist. When she got a rose on her breast she thought it was a bad omen; when she put on her new wedding dress the ballads in her head weighed heavily on her heart; even the portraits of her ancestors on the walls of her bridal chamber disturbed her. These fatalistic thoughts were also stealing Tess's courage and fighting spirit and drowning her in her own Lamentations.
