The proliferation of initials in current English has no doubt been
encouraged by journalistic practice, which sets a premium on economies
of space and time. Their use, like any other device in writing, can be
carried to excess. Still, you should bear in mind the possibility of
replacing repeated references to the National People's Congress with
"the NPC," the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences with
"CASS," the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong with
"the SAR," the US-China Peoples Friendship Association with
"the USCPFA," and so on. The longer the full title, and the
more frequently it appears, the greater the saving in words.
