The character of Collins has mutiple characters. Sycophantic on the one hand, self-satisfied on the other. However, each peoson's personality is formed by both internal and external factors. As for Collins' s subsequent absurb and ludicrous proposal to Elizabeth, it is indeed necessary for the author to begin the chapter with a reasonable account of the formation of this character.
