“So, dualism is enmeshed. A lot rests on it but, as Crick...” 全部笔记(1) 去书内

Dualism is a well-known idea. A lot of beliefs are based on it. But as Crick says, most scientists now agree that dualism is wrong. There' s no separate "you" that can leave your body. Especially, you can’t be separated from your brain. Many experts like cognitive scientists, psychologists and neuroscientists have a clear idea. They say "the mind is what the brain does". This means your mind is just the brain at work. It is similar to how computation is the computer at work. Your thoughts and feelings come from your brain’s activities. They are not something apart from your body. dualism: 身心二元论

“The second argument is, of course, quite famous and this was...” 全部笔记(1) 去书内

Descartes had a famous method called the method of doubt. He asked himself one big question: "What can I be really sure of?" He thought about many things. He believed in God, but he couldn’t be certain. He thought he lived in a rich country, but maybe he was fooled. He even wondered if his family and friends were real. He imagined an evil demon might trick him into believing fake things. The movie The Matrix uses this idea too. It is based on Descartes’ worry about the evil demon. Maybe everything we see and feel is not real. Maybe a bad creature makes it all up. But Descartes found one truth he could never doubt. He said, "I think, therefore I am". If he was being tricked, there must be a "him" to trick. Thinking proves he exists. This truth is the solid base for all his ideas.

“Finally, most people around the world, all religions and most...” 全部笔记(1) 去书内

Most people across the world, in all religions and countries, believe that humans can live on after their bodies die. Different cultures have different ideas about what happens to the body. In some cultures, the body’s fate is linked to the soul. Some people think they will go to Heaven or Hell. Others believe they will be reborn in a new body. Some also think they will enter a formless spirit world. But all these ideas share one thing: the true self can be separated from the physical body. The body can be destroyed, but the self keeps living on.

“This is also not modern. Hundreds of years before the birth of...” 全部笔记(2) 去书内

Dualism is not a modern idea. Hundreds of years BC, Homer told a story about Odysseus' companions. A witch did something bad to them. She didn’t turn them into real pigs. She put their minds into pigs’ bodies. They looked like pigs—they had pigs’ heads, voices, hair and bodies. But their minds stayed the same as before. So they cried while locked in the pigpen. This story lets us imagine being in other creatures’ bodies. We can do this because we think our selves are separate from our bodies.

“As Lewis Carroll’s Alice might have phrased it, “you’re...” 全部笔记(1) 去书内

Lewis Carroll’s Alice might say, “you’re nothing but a pack of neurons”. This idea is really astonishing. It sounds strange and unnatural. Few people believe it at first. Even by the end of the class, it’s unclear if we will accept it. Most people are dualists. They hold a totally different view. Dualism is a popular doctrine. We can find it in every religion and most philosophical systems through history. Plato, for example, stated this idea very clearly. This contrast between the neuron view and dualism shows two different ways to think about human beings. It makes us wonder about our true nature.
