It was often said that great works deserve us to read and chant repeatedly. And as time goes by, our understanding of this work will be more profound. Absolutely, this novel is such a distinguished work that we are supposed to read once at least. In the simple and fluent language, the great expectations lead readers into Pip's dramatic life. The story tells about Pip who was orphaned when he was at a young age. As a consequence, he was raised by his elder sister. But his sister had a bad temper, and she didn't take good care of Pip. Nevertheless, his good brother-in-law Joe was like his father and he gave him warmth and care as a friend. Pip didn't want to be a wealthy man when he was young. He just wanted to be a good blacksmith like Joe. Until she saw Estella, Estella's hot and cold attitude made Pip vow to be a wealthy upper class. At that time, the criminal who helped him in the cemetery got affluent abroad and wanted to make Pip a gentleman with money. Pip arrived in London and began to live in the upper class. Though Pip's heart is inevitably self-condemned, changes in his living environment dominate his values and behaviors. It was a pity that the good days did not last long. Magwitch found him and confessed everything to him. The truth was so unacceptable that the spirit of Pip was hit by a double blow. His long journey was disillusioned, and he was humiliated by a prisoner. After a severe illness, Pip returned to reality and returned to his old life. At the end of this story, Estella's husband passed away. Pip found Estella finally, and they walked out of the ruins of the old house together, hand in hand.My first impression of this book which created when I caught sight of the title is that what my expectation will be. Maybe though seemingly always on the run, I accomplish nothing. Otherwise maybe I am light of heart from care after achieving success and wining recognition. What our future will be is an interesting question. What's more, we should recognize the reality that future depends on today's efforts. In sake of living the lives of our dreams, we are supposed to spare no effort to study hard. After reading this book, in comparison with the ups and downs of this story and the variety of characters in the story, what leaves the deepest impression to me is the brilliant psychological depiction which can be seen everywhere in this book. As an example, 'Rats have been gnawing them with their teeth, but there are still sharper teeth than mice, with which the life has been gnawing me.' The author uses this analogy to describe the pain in the heart of Miss Habersham vividly. Additionally, in this novel, the author often makes the use of natural scenery to serve as a foil to the psychology of characters. 'Walking on the swamp, the fog is thicker, and I feel that everything is rushing to me.' The fog showed that Pip was extremely self-reproach and contradictory mood at that time, which thoroughly reflects the excellence of the author's psychological description techniques. Dickens's psychological description of Pip is so splendid that I seem to have replaced Pip's role in reading and personally savor his feelings. The artifice of psychological descriptions greatly enhanced the artistic appeal of the novel.
