The book review

Recently, I have finished reading Great Expectations, which impressed me so much. It is considered as the masterpiece of Dickens, who I have admired for so long because of another masterpiece of him, Oliver Twist. Pip, the hero of Great Expectations, is an orphan as well as Oliver, and as far as I concerned, there are lots of similarity between them. Pip was living in a blacksmith family with his sister and his brother-in-law, Joe, who also was his best friend. The peaceful life had changed since Pip met a convict someday. Pip was threatened by the convict to help him. After a period of time, Pip was given a great fortune by the convict and started to lead a totally different life in London. But just as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. In the end, Pip lost all his expectations and became an ordinary people again. When I was reading this novel, I was completely immersed in the choppy story. I felt happy for Pip’s luck, and felt disappointed for his corruption, however. Except for the attractive plot, the humor of Dickens also amused me. Especially the funny phrase “by hand”, which indicated that Pip’s sister always hit him. After finished reading Great Expectations, I have to say, I have learned so much from it. The story values the spiritual abundance a lot, which I used to ignore. Dickens taught me that only the peace in mind really matters.
