Reflection of Great Expectation Great Expectation was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most popular critical realist writers of all the time. The novel tells the story of a boy whose life is full of ups and downs, Hero Pip lost his parents at an early age and was brought up by his ill-tempered old sister and her husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith who took Pip on as an apprentice and made friends with him. Young Pip led a simple and happy life with Joe until he met Estella, a woman who had changed his life. Estella was adopted by Miss Havisham as a tool to take revenge on all men. Pip fall in love with beautiful but ruthless Estella at the first sight, but felt a sense of inferiority and determined to become a real gentleman in possession of money, good manners and a great expectation. Fortunately, he received an anonymous sustentation fund, and bid farewell to Joe and this difficult life. Pip came to his cherished London, and gradually lost himself in the whirlpool of money. But in a twist of fate, PIP learned that his benefactor was an escaped convict whom he had inadvertently saved when he was young. In the end, PIP's dream was shattered, and after many setbacks, PIP finally gained the most precious treasure – a peace of mind. As for the theme, there is no doubt that the author is revealing the real society of England in the 19th century, but the author also shows the beauty of human nature. Pip's love for Estella, for example, is so simple and so crazy. And Joe's deep friendship with PIP was so touching. He told PIP they would be good friends for life, and it was true. Even if PIP had alienated Joe when he became a gentleman, Joe not only didn't care, but he was still worried about PIP and even helped him pay off his huge debts when he was in debt. Great expectations, this book of love and hate, can give us endless enlightenment.
