Great Expectations is a story that a boy immersed in dreaming whose dream dashed and returned to reality rather than an encouraging story that a poor boy made his all efforts and succeeded in the end.
Philip, pip, the hero of the book degenerated into a orphan in his early age, abused by his bad-tempered sister and sniffed by Mr Pumblechook. Only his kind brother-in-law Joe Gargery concern him. Once accidental chance, he entered the shabby Sartis estate whose owner is a ghostly woman Miss Havisham cheated in a failed marriage and immersed in the past. In order to revenge, she made all her efforts to bring up her adopted daughter Estella, a noble and cold young lady. Pip fell in love with her at the first sight of her and pursuit her crazily. Therefore, Pip began to hate his poor family and bemoan his lamentable destiny. Later his life changed. Long years ago, Pip saved a criminal named Abel Magwitch who made a big money abroad. In order to reciprocate Pip and satisfy his own strange dream, he used money to make Pip become a gentleman. Pip lived a gentleman life and receive higher education with a legacy given in anonymous way. Pip was very excited because he thought that happy life is coming and he was able to pursuit Estella equally. After arriving London, Pip spent lots of money in eating, wearing,entering some meaningless club, even be ashamed to meet Joe, his old friend. Although Pip sometimes be regret and he has been changed forever. Good time do not last long. His beloved Estella was married with Drummle and his benefactor, Magwitch came to find him. On one hand, his beloved girl was married and his dream broke. On the other hand, a criminal came up to find him and he felt ashamed. In chaos, he found out the truth of all. In order not to make his friends, his parents disappointed any longer, he planed to escaped from The UK with Magwitch. But he failed. After a serious disease, he came round and returned to his previous position. When he met Estella again, they would not separate again.
This book is a great work of famous writer Charles Dickens. There are filled with his deep thinking, the environment’s influence on people. Pip is a kind boy in previous, like staying with Joe, dreaming to be a blacksmith. However, after coming across Estella, he began to his poor, his background, his Joe and all around him. Later, he lived in London, spent money without restrict, made friends with bad guys. It is the legacy and luring city that makes him lose himself and degenerate. As for beautiful Estella, he kissed Pip when she saw Pip’s bravery in her early age. But after living in the gloomy environment and with a horrible woman, Havisham, she turned bad and cold. As an old saying goes: He that lies down with dogs must rise up with fleas. Environment can change one people, rebuild their characters and behaviour, turn beautiful to ugly, turn ugly to beautiful, turn humble to proud, turn generous to selfish, turn angels to evils.
Dickens also expressed his hate towards London. Busy streets, dirty prisons and gloomy inn...all of these symbolize the guilty of London. How can a child not to degenerate in this ugly city? There was an increased chasm between rich and poor in that society. People using contemptible way to make their fortunes while kind people like Joe, Biddy and Magwitch can only be poor or cheated. Such a fairness makes me surprised. Compared to ugly city, beautiful villages made Pip calm down. So writer’s preference is obvious. Compared to London, China today has the same disadvantages. Maybe we can learn something from it.
There is one topic leading the whole book, love. Pip’s love to Estella, the brotherhood between Pip and Herbert, Magwitch’s strange love to Pip. But what makes me moved is Joe’s altruistic love to Pip. In Pip’s growing path, he was brought up from an orphan to a blacksmith, lost and woke up again. Joe always showed his altruistic love to him. When Pip was young, Joe protected him. When Pip grew up, Joe warned him. When Pip went bankrupt, Joe supported him. When Pip got sick, Joe looked after him. This love led him to get back his conscience at last. Joe and Biddy’s happy life characterized by the contrast of Pip’s inexhaustible pursuit. In their behaviour, Dickens expressed genuine praise to precious qualities and emotions of nobodies.
The Great Expectation is also a poem of growing up. I see the ignorant love in an early age, the crazy pursuit in youth and unswerving love in maturation stage, dysphoria in an early age, lost in successful period and redemption when you woke up.In fact, Pip is ourselves in a mirror. We will encounter many new things in our growing path, always be fond of the new and tired of the old. When we became successful, we will look down upon our family, be ashamed to our background, hated the people who love and care you in the past. This is not the only thing that growing bring with you. A mature person should face to his past calmly, accept his family big-heartedly however poor or little it was and reciprocate whoever help you and support you.
From the bottom of my heart, i have to recognize that this is really a nice book that all of us should read it .
