Around the World in 80 Days
Maybe a bold attempt or a seemingly crazy bet will change one man’s fate. After reading this book roughly, this is what I want to share with you most.
In this novel, the hero, Phileas Fogg bet with his card partner that he would tour around the world using 80 days with no advance or delay. The wild bet was seemingly a great departure from his regular peaceful life. However, they didn’t question this serious Englishman, who was no families or friends around. That same night, Mr. Phileas Fogg began his tour with his new servant, Passpartout, a brave French.
Because the plot of the novel mainly took place in the transportation, I’m going to use transportation as a clue in the following article. In the beginning of the tour, nothing terrible happened, and it even had adequate time for Fogg and Passpartout to enjoy the scenery along the way and to buy some clothes suitable for the weather at that time. All these things were due to The ‘Mongolia’ which helped them gained two days.
But in the journey, no one is smooth. In the Bombay, initially Passpartout was ignorant of the local religion and offended it unconsciously. And for Mr. Fogg, a even worse situation appeared without his knowledge, Fix, a detective beginning to accuse him of stealing 55000 pounds and to hunt him. Although these matters attempted to hold them back, they didn’t miss the train which left Bombay to Calcutta. As we all know, a novel is full of drama and ups and downs. The plot turning again, the railway wasn’t finished. Therefore,Mr. Fogg and Passpartout needed to find a new approach to arrive Calcutta making sure they were not late. You might be surprised, but in India, there is no better means of transportation than an elephant. Mr. Fogg bought an elephant at a high price, then he took Passpartout and his new friends to the destination. The experience in the Indian forest was thrilling. They come across a procession of Brahmins and saved a young woman with their bravery. Then they continued their tour, and at the same time their groups began to grow.
It’s hard for me to share with you all the wonderful things in this novel, but I can sum up a few words to let you know what the novel says and what I learn from it. In the rest days of the adventure, they visited the Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and the American Continent. The group experienced diverse cultures, run into all sorts of trouble which would kill the possibilty of keeping a promise, and felt the agony of struggling with difficulties. Eventually they arrived the destination on time without advance or delay. But in this tour Mr. Fogg spent almost all the money he had won by betting. It seemed that such a hard tour did not bring him anything. However, I believe he gained love, friends and diverse happiness which has changed his life.
As what the novel says at the end, it is shown that Phileas Fogg gained nothing by his tour around the world, unless it is happiness.
