The novel tells the story of a dog—Barker, from a well-respected, strong, pretentious farm-leader dog, to struggling in the glacier snow hungry, thin-skinned sled dog, until finally lead the wolves, run freely in the wilderness, so that the Iha people feel the fear of "magic dog", Barker experienced being trafficked, abused slavery to being saved, and finally abandoning humanity completely. The theme in the novel is to admire the strength and courage needed to survive after defeating the enemy. The novel is about a good dog gradually returning to the intertwined and wrestling between wild and human nature, and eventually wild dominated. In this way, the author deeply reflects the jungle law of the jungle——"weak meat and strong food".
