Chapter 5-2
凌晨三点_
The good-natured Billee fell and could not rise. Buck and his
friends saw and realized that this thing was very close to them but they
showed different character. There three typical ones were: Pike,
crippled and limping, only half - conscious and not conscious enough to
malinger; Sol-leks, still faithful to the toil of trace and trail, and
mournful in that he had not traveled so far that he had so little
strength with which to pull; Buck, had made his mind not to get up and
refused to move under the rain of heavier blows which now fell upon him.
Pike endured, Sol-leks remained loyal and resigned, but Buck was
rebellious and wanted to earn a living for himself. In fact, Buck
survived and was adopted by Thornton, while the others were trapped in
the frozen lake. Jack London used the technique of contrast again to
vividly describe Buck's fortune.
