A soul wating for recall As the protagonist of the novel, Buck is not a simple dog but resembles a strong being with his own value and significance. The image of Buck is in sharp contrast to that of human. He has Strong adaptability, excellent leadership skills. Meanwhile, most human show their hypocrisy and cruelty. As described in the novel, “He has the spirit of loyalty and devotion, and also has a wild and cunning side.” Buck experienced a lot, from the cosy life in the Judge Miller’s big house to the primeval forest in the wild. In one hand, the man in red shows the law of club and fang. In the other hand, John Thornton, a true dog lover, treats Buck as his friend. After a series of hardships, Buck learns the law of the wild- “Either to get the right to control, or to be dominated. Mercy is a manifestation of cowardice, and it does not exist in the original life. Mercy will be misunderstood as fear, and when it is misunderstood it will lead to death.” Gradually, the hidden wild nature is inspired when Buck meets the wolves in the forest. However, Buck still keeps a rational distance from the wolves, because of the bond between he and John Thornton. Finally, John is killed in an attack., which terminate the relation between John and Buck. From then on, he follows the call of his soul, run to the wolves, return to nature, and became a real wolf.
