The Call of the Wild
The Call of the Wild ,written by American writer Jack London, tells a story of a dog named Bucks.Bucks used to live in a superior environment with his owner Judge Miller. But later, he was abducted and sold to the cold north to become a sled dog.The transition from living in comfort to adapting to the cold and brutal competition is not easy. He's been through the rat race among the sled dogs, the beating of the gold prospectors.Under all kinds of hardships, he finally listened to the call of the wild and returned to nature.
The novel not only shows the world of dogs, but also reflects the reality of society. In nature, the law of the jungle is fundamental. When buck first came to the north as a sled dog, he had to go through a fierce competition to beat the king and become the leader of the dogs. The owner regarded the sled dogs as working machines, keeping them running day and night. From these examples we can see the enslavement of the weak by the strong and the sharp contradiction between the strong and the weak. The same is true in the human world, where the law of the jungle is not uncommon.Society is always with big fish eat small fish, big bully small. The workers were enslaved by the powerful capitalists and lived in misery. From this novel , we can see the importance of self-exercise.Learning from the sufferings and improving one ’ s ability is the way to survive.Buck, who had changed from a dog of good fortune to one that galloped through nature without fear, went through many trials. In the human society, people should also have an unafraid spirit, to improve their ability and constantly learn lessons. In this novel, the characters of man and dog form a sharp contrast. Most of the characters in this novel are ferocious and greedy. They squeezed the sled dogs for gold, and their greed was insatiable. However,Buck was intelligent and brave. He soon learned to protect himself in the harsh cold after being sent to the cold north. In the end of the novel, the family of the greedy prospectors died, and Buck went back to nature to find his true self. From this conclusion, the author rejects the theory that humans are at the top of the food chain, and calls for people to have a reverence for nature and not to think of themselves as the center of nature. The main idea of this novel is admirable.Harmony between man and nature is the theme called for in the society at present.
In a word, this novel not only tells the story of the dog, but also reflects the human society. The theme of the novel still has a great alertness to people nowadays. We should respect the laws of nature and become a harmonious member of nature.
