The Law of Jungle

郭睿2001

Below is a review of The Call of the Wild, written by a well-known realist writer Jack London. The book focuses on a pet dog who experience extraordinary adventure and finally transform into a wolf-like animal. After reading Buck’s suffering, I can not only realize the difficulty when facing the reality without protection, but also learn about how necessary it is to strengthen myself to be a more independent and unbeatable person.

First, it is vital to introduce the marvelous novelist. Jack London, whose life symbolized the power of will, was the most successful writer in America in the early 20th Century. His vigorous stories of men and animals against the environment, and survival against hardships were drawn mainly from his own experience. His years in the Klondike searching for gold left their mark in his best short stories; among them are The Call of the Wild, and White Fang.

When reading this book, I feel deeply sorry for Buck’s misfortune but also glad to see him overcome all difficulties and attain his freedom at last. His experience does mirror a real life of a youth when getting out of greenhouse abruptly and facing the hard conditions of society. Undoubtably Buck was strong and brave enough to win him lease of life. However, other dogs like Curly were not so lucky as him. Curly ‘s face was ripped open from eye to jaw, and was buried.” That’s the way. No fair play.” This extract briefly reveals the law of jungle. Dogs advocate strength while we humans attach great importance to interest and status. Although we are under the protection of law and would never face such a terrible situation as Buck and Curly, sometimes injustice and bully will happen if we are not powerful enough. This truth can also apply to the competition among countries. We should spare no efforts on enhancing our economic, political, cultural and military level to prevent our country from being offended.

From another perspective, the topic the call of the wild is also an appeal on looking for one’s humanity. Nowadays, we commonly engage in studies, work, fame and so on. Few people really pursue their own happiness and joy like Jack London. Most people suffer a lot, for they are trapped in making their live and tragically give up those they treasure a lot. It is what Jack wants to transmit to the readers that we should all keep the nature we are born with.

Above all, The Call of the Wild is an educational book from which we can all learn. I suggest all undergraduate student should read this book!
