Reading Report
Buck is a dog of judge Miller's family. He lives in a warm valley in Southern California. Then one day, he was abducted and sold to the cold, remote Alaska in the north of the US, and became a sled dog. The poor living environment in Alaska forced Buck to make changes . He is changing from a domesticated dog to a strong and fierce cousin, wolf. He became powerful step by step under the difficulties, and became the leader of the sled dog. However, Hal, the owner of the dog, regarded the dog as a tool. Because Buck couldn’t bear the heavy work, he began to resist the owner. When he was about to be killed, a man named John Thornton saved him. So far, Thornton became his second owner. He was a real dog lover. Mr. Thornton took good care of Buck and Buck also give his loyalty and love to him. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. Mr. Thornton was killed and the last link between buck and the human world was lost. Finally, Buck listened to the call of the wild in his heart and returned to the forest and the wild.
The language of this book is a master piece. Jack London, the author of this book, uses his careful observation and self experience, has unfolded a magnificent picture of the snow field for us with his powerful and wild writing, so that we can go to Alaska in person and experience running on the vast snow field with Buck. The combination of the epic language and the plots in the book can give people a great shock. The original English version can make people realize this better.
Most of the time in this book ,author uses Buck ’s perspective to tell the story . In this way, this novel uses a dog as the hero challenged the traditional novel with human as the hero. In this book, the author also uses the dog's perspective to criticize the human society. Buck, as a dog, is brave, kind, loyal and has super adaptability and excellent leadership ability. But human beings are often cruel, greedy, and arrogant. They believe that human beings are born with the power to control other species. The author criticizes this kind of human arrogance, and expresses his respect to nature and wild animals. What ‘s more,I think the author also uses these dogs to metaphor human society. Author thinks that comfortable living environment has made human forget their wild nature and lose their freedom which they used to have . Human beings have lost the courage to challenge themselves and move forward, and they are willing to be ordinary and put an invisible collar on themselves. Through Buck's story, the author tells us that there is a little wild nature in everyone's heart. At some times, we should try to break away from the collar, listen to the call of the wild, and fight for our own freedom .
