Embrace the nature, embrace the freedom

Book review of The Call of the Wild

When gold was found in Alaska, a new gold rush started. Alaska is a  world of snow and ice, so people need a plenty of sled dogs to work  just like what the horses did in other states. Buck, a dog that is  half St Bernard and half Shepherd, was living a high-fed life in a  manor. However, he was cheated by the gardener and was sold to the  Alaska as a sled dog.

Living in the world of civilization from his birth, Buck was beaten  in black and blue by the cruelty of the true wild. He realized: a    man with a club was a lawgiver, a master to be obeyed. In order  to survive, Buck started to wake the nature that in his blood. After a  series of bloody and cruel struggles, Buck won, he back to the wild  successfully. From then on, he could embrace the nature and freedom,  the ferity of Buck has been waken, he eventually became a wolf in the  wild.

Jack London not only wrote a story about a dog’s return to the  nature, but also reflected his respect to the life and his criticism  to the anthropocentrism. Buck broke free from the shackles of  civilization and sensed the call of the wilderness, which was his  resistance to human beings. This resistance showed that human beings  were self-centered, deprived other species of equal status in the  ecosystem, and destroyed the harmony of the whole ecosystem.

Survival of the fittest. That’s what writer believed in and  tried to expressed in the book. Buck didn’t die from a strange world,  on the one hand, that was because Buck has excellent gene, on the  other hand, was his mind. In conclusion, Buck fought for surviving,  fought for a kind of faith, fought for love from Thornton and fought  for a call from old blood. What impressed most is that the love  between Buck and Thornton. In the hard trek, dogs died from killing  freeze, hunger, clubs, illness, struggles and so on. Buck was waiting  for the coming of death in depressed when John Thornton saved him.  Thornton’s sincere love moved Buck that Buck survive Thornton’s life  twice no matter there was danger threatened his own life. It turns out  that there is such a feeling in the world, it is similar to the warmth  of love, but also beyond the love of a narrow, it is so placid on the  surface, but can let you willingly for it to appreciate, do not  abandon, even life and death. And the death of Thornton coolly cut the  last line that connected Buck with civilization, that determined him  to step into the wilderness.

In the meantime, The Call of the Wild also has some  realistic characteristics. The change of living environment made Buck  changed from a civilized pet to a fierce king in the wilderness. At  the same time, this is also a true portrayal of the real life of  American society. The never-ending intrigues between people, only the  fittest survival, that’s the reality of American society. In this  aspect, Jack London criticize this social reality mercilessly. In this  novel, he never forgave those people such as the man in red sweater  who has already lost humanity and moral codes. He ruthlessly exposed  and criticized the hypocritical morality of the bourgeoisie. The world  in dog's vision, the human nature, especially the reality of American  society, is portrayed incisively and vividly in this book.
