The feature and splendor of the novel lies in the psychological description of the character transformation of the protagonist, rather than in the gorgeous words and profound truth.

The influence of the surroundings on P ip ’ s psychology is everywhere. When he was a child, Pip  never thought of becoming a good blacksmith. But there had been a subtle change in his mind since his first meeting with Estella, because of the great gap in social status, he had for the first time complained that his shoes were too worn and that he spoke in an irregular way, and for the first time asked Joe why he did not speak in a proper way. When he came to London, he began to dress well,  and splurge his money and join a club that only gentlemen could join. Finally, when the man who gave him money  appeared, his first reaction was not gratitude, but disgust that he was too dirty. At this time, he was extremely vain and selfish. But his heart is still the kind  Pip , after the fugitive's bumpy life and selfless move. He returned to Joe with guilt and gratitude, a return to human beauty.

From this point, the novel tells us that the human heart is easy to be corrupted by the influence of the secular world, so that a noble and pure heart is more precious than wealth and status. There is no doubt that the English society in the novel is in the 19th century. This is also the author's criticism and satire of Britain. The countryside and the honest and kind Joe in the novel represent the pure and kind heart of human beings, while the return of Pip  at last embodies the author's wish for the perfection of the human heart.

This novel tells us that money can't buy feelings or happiness. What is more valuable than money and the so-called great future is a pure and kind heart. In fact, the real great expectations of the people should be good with the glory of humanity.
