Be honest to
Be honest to the calling of Our Moon
After reading the book, I have to admit that I envy Charles Strickland.
The first thing that I envy him is his finding of his moon. In the real world around us, I think the moon’s light is much important than the moon itself to normal people. As the moon shed a light on everyone, it’s like a calling coming from our heart. though some are so fond of chasing the things in front of them that they couldn’t ever hear it, some feel it, but only vaguely. And still some are lucky enough that they not only hear it, but also figure out exactly what it means. However, most of us don’t have the lucky to come across it with our own eyes. We realize its existence, but we couldn’t find a exact way towards it. So we may ignore it, we may deceive ourselves, we may struggle in heart, or we may only able to totter towards it step by step following the voice’s instruction. But Strickland, he is so lucky that he find painting, which, from my point of view, not only the signpost pointing out his moon for him, allowing him to see it with his own eyes, but the road leading him come nearer to his moon. So he run away from others and directly towards his moon without hesitation.
The second thing I envy is his ability to do a thing without struggle. The six pence represent our daily lives. Apart from money and materials, they are our relations with others. As long as we live on the society, feed on accomplishment, respect and recognition, there’s no ways of running away even for those who hear the calling. As we could only passively and vaguely accept those voice from time to time without a clear direction and a strong strength that allow us fight against the whole society and stick to ourselves. But the continuous calling from our moon shakes our chasing for pennies those things from time to time. It always makes us struggle and detest ourselves and that’s where our pain and self-abuse begin. But for Strickland, he find his exact road, he know he won’t be lost, he know he could consistently receive strength from his own dream. Therefore, he remains steadfast, and he is able to leave all the others behind without any struggle.
However, to be honest, it doesn’t actually matter what exactly we are chasing. Struggle is indeed the source of our pain. Whether we could have a glimpse of our moon is a chance by luck, not to mention to find the road towards it. It’s not our fault if we couldn’t find it and the pennies could bring us happiness as well. We don’t have to fight against the whole society to stick to ourselves. Though we may not have the lucky of finding the exact road to our dream, we could follow its calling towards it step by step. We may not have the courage to abandon all those society things behind, but we could forgive ourselves and embrace them with leniency and appreciation, then draw a line of limitation and strike a balance between others and our heart. I envy Strickland, but everyone has his or her own way of living. What important most is not the right or wrong of the choice of pennies or the moon, but whether we are honest and stick to the calling of our heart, no matter week or strong. I think that’s the key to our living with no regret or pain of struggle.
