Book Review of Little women Heading Title: Little women Author: Louisa
May Alcott Date of publication: 1868 Number of words: 436000 Place of
publication: America Below is a review of Little women by American
writer, Louisa May Alcott. The story centers on the life of an ordinary
family who has four daughters. From early age, they are taught in a
proper way, surrounded by parents love and patience, though their family
is not that rich. Each of them has a distinct personality and different
shining points. As far as I’m concerned, I think this book should become
the bedtime reading for every girl in the world. The girls described by
this book are the models teaching young child correct outlook on life.
This book sets in America in the 19th centuries, when America Civil War
broke out. It focuses on the life of four sisters in an ordinary family.
Being influenced by the thoughts of Emerson, it stresses the concept of
women’s self-esteem and independence, which is viewed an advanced book
at that time. In the following 4 paragraphs, I’d like to introduce the
four girls for readers, the are Amy March, Meg March, Josephine March
and Beth March. In the family, the smallest sister is Amy, ‘Brave
patience that made the most of opportunity, and the cheerful spirit that
covered poverty with flowers.’ In the book, the writer makes such
evaluation to her. She is a smart girl, but it’s exact that her smart
makes her look a little bit selfish. Speaking of Beth, everyone likes
her. She is so charming that the writer made comments ‘Smell sweet, and
blossom in the dust.’ Though she harbors great dreams like others do,
she decided to company her parents at home. The writer uses such
sentence to show Josephine personal trait: ’Boys go nutting, and I don’t
care to be bagged by them.’ As the oldest child in the family, when her
father is badly ill, she cuts her beautiful brown hair to exchange for
money in order to save her father without any hesitation. However, her
brave manner doesn’t mean she don’t care about her hair or in other
words, her appearance. She also cries silently at night. She is a
warm-hearted angel. When it comes to my opinion on Margaret, the biggest
sister in the family, I think she is the girl that is close to any of us
in the real world. Inside her heart, she look forward an luxury and
blissful life. She favors beautiful clothes, high-heel shoes and balls.
However, in the end, being roused by her inner beauty, she chooses a
sweet love. As far as I am concerned, the book shows the bright side of
poverty that what matters most is the inner beauty of people. The value
of life lies in self breakthrough, confidence, self-confidence and etc.
Though I have to admit money and power do bring us some pleasure, they
are not everything for us. When I finished reading this book, I was
deeply moved by the girls’ personal brave and charm. Now, I just say
goodbye to my teenager ages, setting my foot into the grown-up world. Of
course, through News and real examples around myself, I know that some
of girls at my age set their life goal of marrying a rich man and living
a decent life. It sounds easier than trying hard like a man in future
working places. Actually, such thoughts have slipped through my head
because of my cowardice and laziness. After reading this book, I think I
find my role models—the four girls. They teach me that if we confront
with troubles, the best way to deal with them is not turn to others but
adjust our attitude, fearlessly fight with them. In addition, this book
also reminds me of the love given by my family members. As I am growing
up, gradually, I forget to record the lovely moments with my parents,
all I have done is to bury myself inside studies and worries about my
future. It is this book that let me reflect my manners. After all,
parents are the ones that deserve our commitments.
