Every Girl is Distinctive but Same
“Little Women” is a famous novel written by Louise May Alcott and it was published in 1868. Louise May Alcott is an American author known for her children’s books, especially the classic Women. She is also an abolitionist and a feminist.
As we all know, Louise May Alcott is a famous American author in 19 century. Under the influence of her father, she became interested in writing at an early age. To support her poor family, Louise had to be a maid, a family teacher and a tailor to earn money before she became a professional author. Little Women is her representative work which had achieved enormous success after being published. Little Women which was recognized masterpiece had been popular for more 100 years.
Little Women is set in the Alcott family home, Orchard House, in Concord, Massachusetts and is loosely based on Alcott’s childhood experiences with her three sisters. The novel was very well received and is still a popular children’s novel today. The novel addressed three major themes: “domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine’s individual identity.
This novel takes the family life as the object of description, and takes the emotional entanglement of family members as the clue. The novel describes the ordinary family life of four March sisters. Meg was willing to be poor for love, Jo wanted to be an author by her hard working, Beth faced death calmly and Amy liked to help the weak. No matter who of them, they were working for what they love. Although their dreams and fates were not same at all, they were all independent and strong enough. This novel describes the four March sisters’ thoughts on family, loyalty to love and the desire for affection.
After reading this novel, I think what the author, Louise, would like to express is a women growth story. And it’s not only belongs to the times in 19 century, it could fit each time. What all young girls must face and experience can be found in this book, the sweetness and trouble of first love, the difference between emotion and reason, the gap between ideal and reality, the contradiction between poverty and wealth.
What makes me impressed is Louise May Alcott once said “he felt how rich she had been in the past, that she had more precious things than any money could buy love, shelter, peace and health, which were the true happiness of love.” This sentence deeply moved me which makes me think about myself. Although every word and sentence are simple, it is a ordinary living story, it’s still warm and moving.
Little Women tells me that everyone is not perfect at all, but we can become better if we have the decision to make great efforts for better quality. Just like what Frans Eemil Sillanpaa said that the first condition for all victories is to defeat ourselves. Therefore, no matter what we were before, we can be better if we strive for the better things from now. And from the novel, I have learnt a lot. Firstly, everyone would like to a better person for her spontaneous pursuit of good quality. Secondly, choosing correct money and love view is very important since choosing bread or love is a long topic. Finally, we need others’ help no matter who in our growth. Everyone’s growth can’t leave from good teachers and friends. I think this rules can help me a lot as I grow up.
Little Women is truly a women’s growth history. And what the novel advocates are kindness, loyalty, selflessness, generosity, dignity, tolerance and bravery. All those virtues and beliefs are what human beings respect and pursue. What’s more, these give the novel vitality beyond the times and the country, which is the charm and the reason why it became an immoral classic.
