Little Women: An enteral song for young American women

Little Women is an English novel written by Louisa May Alcott, published in 1868 and 1869 as two parts. It tells a story about four girls growing up in the New England during the civil war.

This novel simply tells the life of four American girls, however, the stories behind them are incredibly attractive. The story’s main characters are the oldest girl Meg, Jo the tomboy, peaceful Beth and the youngest artist Amy. It begin at the civil war and went through a long time. In the story, the March family have a peaceful and playful life. They have many pleasure in their daily, but their life is not always smooth. Meg has paid for her vanity and Jo lost her chance for her character, so as the others. However, when they are facing troubles, they learn from the conflicts, and by the end of each story, girls will learn their knowledge from the experience.

One of the reason why the novel attracts many reader and gains a fame is that the life behind the story is true and specific. For one reason, this novel is based on the author Louisa May Alcott’s life experience with her family. Ms. Alcott had live through the cicil war, thus, from the novel you can always catch the smell of the civil war. And the actions of charactors are vivid, so as their emotion. Conflict appears often,but girls always have the ability to solve them. Every members of the family love each other, not only by their words,but also from their movements. When Jo was proposed, you can feel her struggle and anxious. When girls are laughing ,you can feel happiness from the bottom of your heart.

Little Women has always been one of my favourite books. Even though it was published in 1869, this novel is still popular among the world, and it has already became an old classic for American people. Little Women has been translated into over 50 languages, and it was adapted for movie for another time just last year, which gained over six academy awards.

Why is it so popular? The answer may be that the book expressed inspiring spirits which influence greatly until today. The book written by Louisa May Alcott was intended for the young American women. And the word Little women initially represents Mr.March’s expectation to his daughters, but it’s not about letting girls to be just mother or homewife. Throuough this book, four sisters are finding how to be a little women, and by the end everyone has make it to be their little women. Jo is the most special one among girls, she doesn’t want to be bounded, she’s talented and determined to achieve her dream as a writer. Though sometimes confused, and she has her shortages, she managed to overcome them. It’s the consious of struggle that makes her shining. The character of Jo inspired American women to pursue their dreams and value. Little Women has witnessed the change of American women’s social position and the position to themselves at that time.

What’s more ,we can see the author’s standpoints to the society in many aspect. By the beginning of Chirismas, girls had helped a German family who is very poor. Girls tried their best to help them even though March family is not rich either. Meanwhile, on the contrast, there are rich family such as the Kings, kids their are noisy and spolied, but they can do what ever they want. It shows the huge gap between the rich and the poor in America at that period. Therefore it has another significant meaning upon the growing and finghting of American little women.

Little women is the literacy classic that never makes its reader feel boring. It’s the enternal song for little women that deserve us to listen to.
