, written by American author Louisa May Alcott, concerns the growth and
love of four girls. Setting in the civil wars, the book thoroughly
unfolds the conservative belief that women were live to marry and bear
at that time. Filled with authentic events and detailed description, the
book shows a wonderful story about how the four girls act as rational
and independent and finally find their true love. The four girls are
natural sisters and each of them owns distinct character. Besides, each
of their own stories reflects profound and moving truth. Meg, the
oldest and most beautiful one, is greatly mature and tender, desiring
for true love and beatific marriage. She is keen on attending party and
elaborately choosing a mate. It is her sincere and pure desire that
getting married with her true love, not just obeying the social custom
casually. As a sensible lady, she knows so exactly what she wants that
she refuted Jo confirmedly by the words ‘Just because my dreams are
different than yours doesn’t mean they’re unimportant’. Her story tells
me that whether normal or elevated, everyone’s dream should be
respected. Also, we should figure out what we really want deeply in our
heart, not just chasing the same dream as others do. Jo, the second
oldest girl, is bold and unrestrained, sometime a little boyish. In her
view, female are not ought to be a graceful and quiet lady. She usually
acts like a uncourteous boy to show contradiction to the social
stereotype. Desiring for freedom and independence, she despises marriage
and work hard to be a writer. Though she relies and loves Laurie deep in
her heart, she turned down his proposal to keep away from restrain. In
my opinion, I consider her a typical and rational feminist. She is so
brave and firm to fight against the secularity and appeal for the equal
rights between men and women. It reveals to the women that if you want
to live your own life, you should own the ability to earn yourself a
living. Beth, the third daughter in the family, is hardworking and
quiet. She undertakes most of the housework and enjoys in it. However,
when she sent food to a poor family, she was unfortunate to be infected
with a serious illness. The writer shapes Beths as an extraordinarily
kind but miserable character. It is one of the most moving part that
Beth can’t get through the illness and finally gone. She is such an
authentic character that shows the frail and painful life of poor
people. Amy, the youngest girl, is naughty and lively. We could see
the change of a developing girl on her. At her young age, she was
largely masters by emotion so she burned Jo’s writings for the simple
reason that Jo didn’t take her to the theatre. As she grew up, she
learned to be rational and tolerant. In Europe, when Laurie was obsessed
with drinking and playing, she cared for him and inspired him to cheer
up. She acted as a mature and considerate woman and Laurie finally fell
in love with her. Throughout the whole book, in my opinion, it is the
greatest pity that Jo couldn’t marry to Laurie. They share the same
hobbies, the same characters and the same topics. They get along so
closely that everyone supposes they should be together. However, life
never acts as you wish. Although they love each other deeply, they miss
the proper occasion to express their love. Maybe the missing is the most
perfect ending for them, as they finally realized what they always
chased for. This book reveals that women should hold the rights to
choose the life they want, not just obeying the stereotype. It describes
an ideal character of women —— kind, tolerate, rational and independent.
Through the love stories of the girls, it teaches us how to chase our
true love bravely and cherish the love we own. 大气科学 黄伦漳 19305026
