Violet Dream
Violet Dream --- My Thoughts On The Tiredness of Rosabel
This story shows the tiredness and struggle of the life
of a girl at the bottom of society by contrasting her daydream and
reality. In this book, the auther always uses a female perspective
in a particular class of society to tell the story and to show what
is the socity like in their eyes. And this sory realizes the
combination of two perspectives which from different classes of
socirty. This contrast highlights the harshness of reality and
reminds me of The Little Match Girl. They both face the
hardships of life after their dreams fell apart, the little metch
girl dead but Rosabel " shivered, drew a little gasping breath,
sat up " with the " tragic optimism which is all too often
the only inheritance of Youth ". This difference makes me think
that Rosabel not only reflects the difficult situation of the
ordinary women in Victorian times but also shows thier strength and resilience.
Another thing I want to talk about is the symbolism in this story. I name my book review Violet Dream because violet is a key subject to show Rosabel's struggle in this story. Violets as we would be aware are purple and purple is commonly associated with royalty and dignity. In her dream, Harry buys her violets. That's her imagining of a good life. At the begeining of the story, Rosabel also buys a bunch of violet but it makes her have little money to have an enough meal. That's what she pays for escaping from the realities of her own life and pursuing the life like Harry's wife. So the violet dream is beautiful but easily crushs beneath the harsh reality of life.
