Book Review
向雪芹
In the form of an epistolary, the book takes us into the world of the
protagonist Werther. Reading his letters, we can get a clear sense of
what happened with him. His letters contain stories, scenes, lyricism
and, above all, the intense struggle of his own thoughts, which reveal
to us his complex and rich inner world. In the book, there are delicate
and authentic depictions of nature, and Werther admires the rustic
people, the simplicity, the innocence of children, and the beauty of the
environment. He lived so comfortably in that small village An important
topic in the book is love. This point is evidently expressed in
Werther's letters. He loved Charlotte. At the beginning of the letter,
we can feel that his love was so passionate and sincere. He couldn't wait
to see her every day. They communicated with each other and reached a
high level of understanding in soul. However, after Charlotte became
other's wife, he fell into a deep distress. He was in so much pain that
he could not contain his love for Charlotte, and the feeling was deeply
bound by reality. In the end, this feeling could not be resolved and
released.Eventually,he chose to committed suicide to free himself. Such
an end is thought-provoking.It is a tragedy of love. We feel sorry for
Werther . But Werther died because he is a true lover. True love is
unrequited, no matter whether there is an end or not. At the same time,
while thinking about what led to Werther's death, there is a debate
between morality and love. Obviously, in the end, Werther could not bear
that kind of secular view, and he had no courage to break through his
own moral bottom line to fulfill his love. If we praise Werther's
concept of love we will criticize that kind of secular vision and
concept. For this, everyone may have his or her own answer in mind.
