赵欣彤
What are Santiago's spiritual characters reflected in the book?
The first spirit is his compassion for nature. The old man's life
experience forged his innate sympathy. He gets along with nature day and
night, which makes him have a strong feeling with nature. As a child he
had been close to nature, seeking pleasure in the vast and remote world.
He also showed his tenderness towards the seabirds, treating them with
compassion. His deep attachment to nature made him wander fearlessly
in the sea, and his voyage would allow the current to share his
strength. Harmony with the sea made his voyage easy. His voyage was a
pleasure, a journey, a search for soul-filling matter in the wide world.
He placed himself in the sea with ease, no matter the harvest, as if a
kind of habitat, the spirit is in peace at the moment. The second
spirit is his"tough guy"personality. The old man continued
to fish at sea, even for too many days without much success. He
continued to sail day after day. Finally, on the eighty-fifth day,
caught a marlin. In the meantime, his hand was hurt by the tight line,
and he took it easy. Faced with a big fish that doesn't seem to tire,
the old man waged an enduring battle with him. Finally the old man tied
the fish to the bed and prepared to return to port. The enduring
battle between the old man and the big fish is not only his compassion
for the nature and respect for the rival fish, but also the embodiment
of his indomitable, strong and unyielding character. Face the great
difficulties at hand with a deliberate attitude. Facing the abyss of
fear and the fate of sorrow, he maintained his inner self-esteem with a
strong will. "A man can be destroyed, but never defeated." In
my opinion, it's the best interpretation of an old man. One tries his
best to fight, has the courage to change the fate, can break through the
darkness, invincible. The third is the spirit of unimaginable
loneliness. On his way home, the old man unfortunately encountered a
shark attack, killing the fish caused by the blood attracted sharks. The
shark, like a gangster of evil forces, robbed the old man of days'
worth. Arriving at the shore with only a skeleton, he created for
himself a moment of joy only his own harvest of glory, but the skeleton
became a testament to his success. Proud and lonely spirit made him
not to give up hope or even commit suicide after failure, he also
created a remarkable glory, obtained satisfactory results. But he didn't
get so excited after his success that he wanted to let the world know,
nor did he give up hope in hopes of not falling behind. His long perch
at sea gave him a habit of solitude and restraint. Do not love to talk
to others, do not communicate with others too much. His depressed
character has built up his extremely vast spiritual sanctuary. All he
has done is to fill the void of spiritual sanctuary and make his life
reach the meaning he expects. "The old man is dreaming of
lions." This is the final sentence of the novel. To the lion's
mighty, revealed the old spirit of the vast world. This lion is the
dignity and spiritual home of the old man Ping tries his best to defend.
He will feed off the "lion" and sustain him through life,
going on and on.
