桑地亚哥是成功者还是失败者?

Before reading this book, I had read the Chinese version of <The Old man and the Sea>, but reading the full English version of this work gave me a new feeling.

First of all, in terms of content, this book tells the story of Santiago, an experienced old fisherman. Santiago and a little boy named Mallorin became friends. After eighty-four days without catching fish, the old man resolutely went to sea alone. The old man was lucky to meet a huge marlin and caught it after twists and turns. The old man thought he could return here. Unfortunately, the big fish caught by the old man attracted the siege of sharks. The fierce and huge sharks have been attacking fiercely, which seems to be forcing and threatening Santiago to give up the big fish. However, Santiago is not a coward. In danger, facing great threat and death, the old fisherman has been tenaciously resisting. Although the last big fat and delicious fish was eaten by sharks, leaving only a skeleton, Santiago did not give up easily. He said "A man can be destroyed, but not defeated."This sentence deeply shocked me. After reading this book again, it changed my previous view that he just dragged his fish bones back and failed to catch fish. I think for Santiago, he is successful in spirit, but in fact he is a failure. Santiago's indomitable tough man spirit in the face of both Marlins and sharks is obviously his greatest success. Although a person will never lose his sense of fear in the face of those dangerous situations, Santiago overcame his sense of fear and difficulties. So even if he didn't bring back the fish, he won. In the face of fear, conquering yourself is the winner. But Santiago is also a loser. Although he defeated himself, in the end, as 84 days ago, he still didn't catch fish. This is a real failure.

However, from my personal point of view, I think this tough and unyielding old man is a winner. On the road of life, failure is not only failure to achieve the expected goal, but also another meaning, that is to lose the confidence and courage to continue fighting and lay down your weapons. Human beings are the real losers who yield to the limit. So, Santiago is not a loser. The old man never gave up his weapons. He just lost his weapons. The old man did not lose confidence. Therefore, we can not say that the elderly is "loser".

Secondly, as long as people have defects, not to mention the old man. When a person admits his own defects and tries to overcome it rather than succumb to it, it doesn't matter whether he finally catches a complete marlin or an empty skeleton, because the value of a person's life has been fully reflected in the process of catching marlin. He has tried his best to pursue and struggle for his ideal. Isn't he a winner?

It is often said that the process is important and the result is more important. However, when we try our best in the process, sometimes the result is not so important, because we do our best, there is nothing to regret. So I think Santiago is the winner.
