Romain Rolland said, "Love is the most precious thing in life when it sacrifices itself." So the protagonists in these two novels have gained the most precious affection in life. O. Henry's novels also make us see clearly the darkness of the society and the selfishness and indifference among people at that time. People of the upper and noble classes were blinded by money and interests and had no right to feel love. Love only shines in the underclass.

Love can transcend everything, which is what O Henry's novel advocates. O. Henry's desire to break through the darkness, but his inability to do so, results in his immortal writings, which give us more thoughts about humanity, conscience, good and evil.
