Book Review

We are not ashamed of being stupid. We are only ashamed of being more stupid than our friends around us. It doesn't matter what we miss, if we never expect to have it. We will not be disappointed because of poverty, since we did not expect to be rich.

     It’s my pleasure to read this book.This book is written by Charles Dickens a famous author in 19th century.Dickens paid special attention to describing the life experiences of "little people" living at the bottom of British society, deeply reflected the complex social reality of Britain at that time.This book is his late work. He just broke up with his wife Catherine. He began his extramarital love with young actor Ellen Turner. This relationship brought him more pain than happiness.During this period, due to the further deeper understanding of the darkness of society and the misfortune of personal marriage,the depressed side of the author's thought increased.

   This book mainly tells about Pip's transformation from a coarse little boy to a wonderful gentleman.He was brought up by his sister by hand in a rude way.Luckily, his sister’s husband Joe was so kind to him.By chance, Pip was invited to Miss Havisham's home,and his heart changed from then on. He fell in love with the beautiful but proud Estella and began to feel ashamed of his origin.One day, Pip was chosen to inherit the fortune from an unnamed person. He was sent to London to receive superior education,gradually he lost himself in rich life. Later, Pip found that all his wealth came from a convict saved in his childhood, Magwitch. Through a series of things,Magwitch could not escape the fate of his punishment, but Pip deeply realized the value of friendship and family affection in a series of changes.

   This book impressed me so much. The plots of the novel are ups and downs,and characters in the novel are vivid.Pip was persistent boy who always knew what he wanted.He wanted to be a gentlemen,so he worked hard to achieve it.Although he never be happy with Estella, he still loved her.Joe was always warm-hearted and kind.When Pip made mistakes,he said that “No more lies,live well,and died happy”He had a bad father but he still thought that “Whatever faults he had made from the start,he had a good heart.”When he went to visit Pip In London ,he said “Life is full of so many goodbyes. You won't find so much wrong with me if you come to see Joe, the blacksmith,at the old forge, doing the old work.”Havisham was a pathetic woman who suffered from revenge and couldn’t get rid of it.Estella was a proud and cold girl who was brought up by Havisham to be her revenge tool.Magwitch was a pathetic convict,whose life was almost out and in prison.Herbert was kind who always be a supporter of Pip.

    In this book, I think every cause has its fruit,and things have complicated relationships.All we have to do,is always be generous and stick to the right things we think.We should not live with revenge.It was other wonderful things that lies in our life.
