The book review of Great Expectations
罗永琪
Great Expectations tells us the story of what happened in the three
important stages of Pip's life from the age of seven. At first, Pip
depended on his sister and brother-in-law. His sister used to live
mostly as a tigress and his brother-in-law Joe was a good man. By
chance, Pip met the fugitive Magwitch in the cemetery and he stole food
from his home to the fugitive, which also laid the stage for the later
adventure. After that, Pip was summoned to the manor by Miss Havisham.
In the manor, she felt the gap between the poor and the rich, and
gradually looked down on his family and friends around him. A few
years later, A “luck” fell down on Pip. A famous lawyer from London
visited. He claimed that he was entrusted by an anonymous person to take
Pip to London for a high-class education, and Pip would finally receive
a valuable inheritance. Under this circumstances, Pip was happy to
receive this chance. Slowly, Pip began to pay attention to a good life
and the superficial scenery, which led to a high debt. Pip's dislike of
Joe, a relative as well as a best friend, makes me see the influence of
vanity on a person. In this part, I see the flattering faces of some
snobbish people and the sincerity of some kind people as always.
Later, the benefactor appeared, and Pip was hit hard. The "great
future" he expected in his heart was an acquaintance who gave him.
Although he became vain, his conscience was still alive. He tried his
best to help his benefactor, as a fugitive escaping from danger. But he
had no choice but to be tricked by fate. In the end, the fugitive was
arrested and finally died. He also lost his inheritance. The
kind-hearted Joe helped Pip pay off part of his debts and took care of
him to recover. His previous good deeds silently to his good friends in
turn helped him. Years later, he and his good friend Herbert did some
businesses in the East and later returned to their hometown. In the
ruins of the memories, Pip met the Estella again. Falling in love with
Estella leaves us an imaginative ending. I like the ending paragraph
very much. “We walked, hand in hand, out of the old garden. As the
morning mist had risen long ago when I first left the forge, so the
evening mist was rising now, and in the clear moonlight I saw no shadow
of another separation from her.” Great Expecations is not only a
novel, but a book full of lessons and morals. Pip's life is just like
all of us, it goes up, when Pip got his money, and it goes down, when
Pip was lost in his paths. Great Expectations isn't a significant or
legendary novel in my opinion, in fact, it's a guide for our life.
