Robinson Crusoe

Robinson Crusoe is a novel, first published on April 25, 1719. It is written by British writer Daniel Defoe. After its publication, the book was very popular and has been adapted into films and TV dramas for many times.

The main characters of the book are few and the content is simple and easy to understand. In terms of writing techniques, the book is narrated in the first person, giving people a sense of reality. It is worth mentioning that this book is inspired by real events. In September 1704, a Scottish sailor named Alexander Selkirk quarreled with the captain and was abandoned by the captain in the Atlantic Ocean. Later, he lived alone on a desert island for 4 years and 4 months, and was finally rescued by Captain woods Rogers. The author was infected by this story, took it as a frame, combined with his imagination and experience to think, and created Robinson Crusoe.

About the background of the book: since Britain defeated Spain in 1588 and became the maritime overlord, colonial expansion and maritime trade have developed rapidly. The wealth brought by these activities greatly promoted the development of British Industrial and commercial capitalism and the emerging bourgeoisie. The wealth and knowledge brought by the Great Voyage excited many British asset owners. Against this background, Defoe created this book, by portraying an adventurer who constantly pursues and makes progress, praising the adventurous and enterprising spirit of the bourgeoisie in the rising stage of capitalism, and showing their intelligence, labor enthusiasm and perseverance to overcome difficulties for creating personal wealth.

The content of this book mainly introduces the four voyage Adventures of the protagonist Robinson. Robinson is a brave young man. He was born in a middle-class family and lives a rich and comfortable life. However, his character is restless. He likes adventure and sailing and wants to travel around the world. Therefore, he began his life at sea in spite of his father's dissuasion. The first voyage was safe and smooth; The second time was nothing special; But the third time, he unfortunately became a prisoner of the Pirates of Türkiye, and escaped after hard efforts. After that, he went to Brazil to run sugarcane fields and sugar factories, which were in good condition.

But four years later, Robinson went to sea again, because he was not satisfied with his life at that time and he wanted to get more benefits. However, their luck at sea was very bad. They encountered a shipwreck when they went to Africa to sell black slaves. All the crew members were killed. Only Robinson narrowly escaped and drifted on a desert island. At the beginning, he was very desperate, but he didn't give up hope, slowly calmed down and accepted his situation.

First, he moved the tools, wine, food, guns and ammunition from the wrecked ship to the island. Then he found a suitable place to build a residence for himself and gradually perfected it. After the initial dilemma was solved, Robinson began to use his intelligence to improve his quality of life. He made wooden boards, pottery pots, shovels and other tools, and also dried raisins and domesticated goats as food. Not only that, he also grows wheat and rice every year and uses them to make bread. He lived alone for 23 years until the 24th year, when a group of savages came to the island, they took their captives and prepared to eat them. After Robinson finds out, he rescues one of them and named it "Friday". One day, a big ship docked beside the island. Robinson and Friday helped the captain solve the problem, and then took the ship to leave the island. After arriving in the mainland, Lu Bin became a rich man by virtue of his previous industry.

After reading Robinson Crusoe for the first time, I first felt that it was a very unrealistic and interesting book, suitable for the taste of teenagers. However, because the level of thought and knowledge at that time was not enough, it was just a very attractive story to me. At that time, I always skipped the beginning directly and watched how Robinson managed his life on the island. It was purely a spectator. After watching it again this time, I still feel that the process of his island survival is very interesting, but the difference is that this time I understand some truth from his behavior, thought change, experience and so on.

First, start from the beginning of the story. Robinson was born in a middle-class family. To a certain extent, his life is free of many troubles. His happiness index is higher than most people. His father advised him to keep his head above water and not to take risks. The old man's words were undoubtedly full of wisdom. He was heartbroken for his son. However, Robinson does not listen. He insists on his own ideas and behaviors. After repeatedly going to sea, he finally pays the price and falls on a desert island. After the real disaster happened, he regretted not listening to his father's advice. Like many children in reality, we, I always think that our ideas are not wrong. We usually ignore the advice of our family, and we can only accept those correct suggestions when we really fall down. This tells us that "if we don't listen to the old people's words, we will suffer in the face". Our parents are many years older than us. To some extent, they know more than us. Therefore, we should think carefully about their suggestions.

In addition, Robinson's fourth trip to sea is actually impulsive and unwise. He clearly has enough wealth and these assets are enough for him to live a good life, but he still risks going to sea again. This time, he failed to escape his bad luck and was exiled to an isolated island. To a certain extent, we can say that Robinson's experience is entirely his own, and is caused by bad factors in his character. First, he did not think in advance and acted impulsively. Second, he is too greedy for money, because money puts his life at risk. Third, he is not satisfied. He wants more when he has enough money. From his tragic experience, we can see that it is very important to consider and plan in advance. At the same time, it is not good to be too greedy.

When Robinson arrives on the island, he has no place to live, does not know the specific situation of his environment, and no one helps him. He himself was in a very lonely situation. For most people, this situation may have fallen into despair. But he didn't. after he accepted the reality, he began to think of ways to use his intelligence and knowledge to create various conditions for himself. This highlights the importance of the state of mind. No matter what the situation, a calm state of mind is better than a square inch of chaos. Not only that, I dare say that not everyone can accomplish what Robinson did on the island. He was able to make bread, tables, pots and so on successfully, which was largely due to his rich knowledge. If it were not for this knowledge, he would not have such a high standard of living on the island, and might even have died. It can be seen that knowledge is very important. What we have learned may one day become a tool to save our lives. Therefore, we should study knowledge well, not only from textbooks, but also from life.

Robinson has lived on the island for 25 years. During this long time, he hardly let himself rest. When it doesn't rain, he works outdoors, farming, drying raisins, and domesticating goats. In the rainy season, he stays at home to process grain and repair houses. His happy life on the island is not easy. Every good condition is the result of his efforts. This tells us that a good life is a struggle, and laziness can only accomplish nothing.

Before Robinson did not find that footprint, he was carefree. For a long time, he had lived a very relaxed life and had no psychological pressure. But after he found the footprints, he began to know the existence of the savages. At this time, he realized that the original danger did not exist, but had not been discovered. In this case, the sheep he domesticated and the trees he planted are particularly important. When I was reading, I was relieved because of his relatively perfect preparation. It can be seen that dangers and difficulties are sometimes potential and may be discovered suddenly. Only when we have prepared a lot of things in advance can we provide ourselves with confidence and a sense of security and will we not be at a loss when threats suddenly appear. Therefore, it is necessary to have a sense of hardship to a certain extent.

What impresses me most about this book is the friendship between Robinson and Friday. Robinson has lived alone on the island for more than 20 years. He is undoubtedly very lonely. Finally, he saved Friday from a group of savages. The young savage volunteered to become his servant and was loyal to him. I am very happy to see here, because Robinson finally does not have to endure loneliness. Not only that, in the process of getting along with Friday, Robinson taught him to speak English, tried his best to make clothes for him, and gave him mutton to eat so that he could stop the habit of eating human flesh. He was very friendly to Friday. They were both masters and servants and friends. Although they believe in different religions and have different languages and cultures, they can still live in harmony like father and son. This makes me realize that the gap will not cause great estrangement between people. As long as we are tolerant of differences, we can live in harmony. In addition, Friday's feelings for Robinson are also very touching. He is always loyal to him and fights side by side with him. Even in the face of the temptation of his hometown, he still says: I won't go if the master doesn't go. Although he is a savage, he is also as loyal as civilized people, which makes me see the beautiful side of human nature.
