Failure or Success
Hemingway's the Old Man and the Sea is a very inspiring story. The story takes place in Cuba in the 20th century. The protagonist Santiago is an old fisherman in his twilight years. He has been unlucky recently because he hasn't caught a fish for 84 days. For the first forty days, he had a young companion. But the boy's parents disliked the old man's bad luck, so they sent the boy to another boat. Coincidentally, the boat caught three big fish after seven days, which made the old man think that he was really unlucky. Other fishermen laughed at the old man as a loser, so the old man couldn't hear him. He was always thinking about tomorrow, and he would surely catch fish tomorrow. Finally, tomorrow, that is 85th day, the old man went out to sea with the bait and food prepared by the boy before dawn. It was such a fine day that the old man decided to float to the depths of the sea. He put the fishing rod in the right place, and after waiting patiently all morning, the old man finally got a big Marlin, which was 18 feet long. But the huge fish did not surface, but dragged the old man and the fishing boat farther away. In this way, they were deadlocked for two days and one night. The fish is so strong that the old man's hand is scarred by strangulation. But this fish is the old man's dream, so the old man will not give up. When the sun rose on the third day, the marlin finally jumped out of the water, and the old man tried his best to put the harpoon at the fish. But the boat can't hold the big fish. The old man fixed it to one side, ready to go home. But the blood of the big fish attracted the shark. The old man began to fight with the shark, and finally the old man won. But the carcass of the big fish attracted more sharks, and the old man tried his best to drive away all the sharks. The battle is finally over, because the big fish has been eaten up, and the old man's spirit has reached its limit. The old man returned to the cabin and the neighbors were surprised to see the remains of the salmon. The old man fell asleep slowly under the care of the boy.
Above, the story of the old man and the sea is over. This book only tells the story of an old man fishing, but the background of the story is after World War II. The whole world is in ruins, and people are full of fear and unease about the future. This book gives people a lot hope. Hemingway told everyone that we should learn to love life and be strong in the face of unexpected difficulties in life, as the book said, "A man can be destoryed, but not defeated."
What is failure? Perhaps it can be said that people to do a thing, did not achieve the desired goal, this is failure.
But those who struggle with fate, those who struggle close to their limits, are born close to this kind of failure. When the old man went to the sea, he could not expect fish to bite his hook every day, so he often failed. A person who is often engaged in a struggle close to his own limits will often fail, a person who wants to explore the mysteries of nature will often fail, and a person who wants to explore the mysteries of nature will often fail, and a person who wants to reform society will often fall. Only those who are content to live within their limits always "win". This "winner" is often undefeated only because his opponent has long been subdued, or that is to say, he is not involved in the struggle at all.
In my opinion, victory is to fight to the last moment. The old man always goes to the unfathomable sea with great courage, and his confidence is invincible.
