Jane Eyre读后感
I still remember the first time I know about Jane Eyre was at my fourth grade, my English teacher played the movie for us. Frankly speaking, as a little girl I knew so little about love and humanity. The most impressive scene for me was when Rochester asked Jane to marry him and he showed his love to her. I thought this is so romantic and this must be true love. As time flies, after experienced so many things I have already changed a lot and my viewpoint of the book has changed too.
I restarted to read this book in November meanwhile I watched the movie again. This time I was deeply touched by the kindness of Helen. I have to say it must be Helen who taught Jane to love and be kind. When Jane was in Gateshead, she suffered a lot from the bully of her cousin and the indifference of her aunt. So Jane was actually mean but Helen saved her. There is a scene when Jane asked Helen to took of her hat in order to draw a picture of Helen which was not allowed at that charity school. When the headmaster came and saw Helen’s beautiful long red hair, he thought this behavior was vanity and obeyed the Bibble so he rebuked Helen to cut her hair off. Helen never blamed Jane instead she comforted Jane. Helen was Jane’s best friend at Lockwood but she died in an early age. Years after years, Jane had turned from a student to a teacher. She finally decided to chase for her own life so she packed her bag and went to Thornfield manor as a private tutor.
Jane met Rochester by accident and it was the accident that drew Rochester’s attention of the girl. I have to say the book has descried him so well that I nearly forgot he was 20 years older than Jane. As the youngest son of the family, Mr. Rochester contributed his life to the family's wealth. He married with a crazy woman that he didn’t love just for her family's property. Though he was always maintaining a gloomy and cold image, I have to say he was a kind man. He adopted Adle and gave her a wealthy lifestyle. When his ex-wife was in the fire, he didn’t have to save her but he did and it almost killed him. He never looked down upon Jane even though their social status was very different. In his eyes, Jane Eyre was fresh and pure like an angel. In the book, his original words are: 'You are almost perfect.' Yes, in his eyes, Jane Eyre was perfect. Even if Jane Eyre had nothing, he loved her very much.
What surprised me most about the book is the thought of feminism Charlotte Brontë showed. Jane Eyre is a female image who pursues spiritual freedom and independent personality. From Jane Eyre's childhood, we can see her thirst for knowledge. The author used this way to tell women that knowledge can change their destiny. At that time, in the Victorian era of England, male chauvinism was still absolutely dominant, and the relationship between men and women was completely dependent, there was no such equality between men and women. Though we are always living under the pressure of patriarchal society, women led a better life now than past time. The first awoken of the feminism in Jane was when John her evil cousin humiliated her again for no reason and she revolted but she ended up with confinement in the red room where her uncle died. Though Jane had never been to school before but the books that she read had made her have an abundant spirit world and she knew what was fair and what was right. She must be the rebellious child in people’s mind but I think she is braver than most of the girls. Additionally, Jane Eyre, though eager for love, is more moral. When she learned that Rochester's wife was still alive, although she loved him deeply, she would never be the third person to destroy other people's families. She refused the wedding. Her refusal not only kept the bottom line of morality, but also maintained her dignity. However, she came back to him again when he was disabled and had nothing left. She loved him because it was him, not because of his fortune or his social status. Jane Eyre inherited her uncle's inheritance and became an enviable rich man. She did not dislike Rochester because he was disabled. She still followed her own nature and stayed by her lover's side. Finally, they married and lived a happy life.
Based on the struggling experience of a young woman from a humble family, the author expresses the view that the most important thing in love is independence and equality. Nowadays, young people are increasingly pursuing spiritual and economic independence and integrity in love. Jane Eyre is a novel that integrates all of these. Every time I read the book new thoughts would come, I am expecting after 10 or 5 years how will I make comment on this book.
