After Reading Treasure Island
李佳玟
Treasure Island is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson, a British
novelist, in 1881. Treasure Island is based on the real historical
background. The desert island in the book, Cocos Island, is located in
the Pacific Ocean 483 kilometers away from the coast of Costa Rica. It
was once a rest station for pirates in the 17th century. Pirates often
load, unload and bury the plundered treasure here, which adds a lot of
mystery to this beautiful island. It is said that there are at least six
treasures buried on the island. The story is about a young British boy
Jim who got the legendary treasure map from the dying sailor Burns in
the mid-18th century and organized an expedition to Treasure Island with
the support of local squires. He fought against pirates with Gunn people
and finally quelled the rebellion and successfully obtained the
treasure. Treasure Island reflects the desire of Orientalism to
"orientize" and "accommodate" the East. Treasure
Island and its treasures represent the oriental image distorted by
Orientalism. The story of
Treasure Island is mainly unfolded from the perspective of young Jim.
The author successfully grasped the observation perspective of a child
and narrated with the first person "I", which not only
enhances the intimacy of the article, but also makes the whole narrative
conform to the child's language habits from the tone of speech to the
choice of words and sentences. As a result, this treasure hunting map
for young people not only exudes a strong interest in children, but also
is full of tempting adventure. The plot unfolds in chronological order,
attracting readers with suspense and climax one after another. For
example, at the beginning of the novel, Flint, the fierce and strange
old pirate with mysterious actions, makes readers think that this
mysterious figure is the protagonist of the novel. All people were
afraid of him, but he always waited in fear and avoided a "one
legged sailor" He fell ill and died when he saw the blind man. Only
then did the reader realize that he was not the main character. The
author uses this kind of suspense to draw the attention of the readers,
constantly arousing the preset situation in the readers' horizon of
expectation, while constantly trying to break the inertia of the
readers' horizon of expectation, and fully arousing the readers'
imagination and sense of adventure.
The most attractive part of this novel is not only the specific details
of treasure hunting, but also the description of Jim Hawkins, the hero
of the novel. He is brave, witty and adventurous. However, the formation
of his character comes not only from the experience of life, but also
from learning from the example. By Jim's side, there was Dr. Livesey,
who was calm and calm, Trelawney, an upright and noble squire, Smollett,
a careful and alert captain, and Silver, a treacherous but shrewd
pirate. In his constant adventure, Jim absorbed some of the qualities of
the adults around him. Later on, he was as calm and sophisticated as his
adult partners. He even absorbed Silver's characteristics of being good
at analysis and careful in thinking. So he dared to sneak into the
pirate's boat. Through hardships and adventures, Jim's maturity at the
end of the story is completely different from his ignorance at the
beginning. Jim's image is shaped by the author's call for the heroic
ideal. It is not necessarily the callfor the Achilles type heroes in
ancient mythology, but the heroic spirit that can bravely explore the
unknown world in ordinary times and overcome cowardice and bravery under
the threat of great danger. This spirit was particularly valuable in the
late 19th century, when money worship heroes gradually retired. The
description of the scenery in Treasure Island is also wonderful. The
endless waves, the damp and oppressive forests, and the "Twin Mast
Mountain and Telescope Mountain" which stand high in the middle of
the island vividly depict the scene of this strange and desolate
Skeleton Island. Let people feel as if they are in the scene, and follow
the hero on the adventure journey. Treasure
Island can make readers feel the temptation of money. Money can change
people's feelings. Money corrupts the world, and money corrupts
everything. But money itself is innocent, just people who are
psychologically degenerate dream of owning it, using it or even
controlling it. Therefore, money has become a synonym for evil. But
money is sometimes beneficial to human beings. For example, hard work
will bring rich benefits. At this time, money gives people the power to
make progress. As long as money is used reasonably, it will be the most
beneficial thing. After reading this book, I understand that in the
future, we should be active and brave, go forward bravely, face danger
bravely, and face difficulties bravely; The story warns us not to be
selfish in anything, because that is the wrong way in your life, and Jim
and others are embodied in a spiritual wealth represented by justice.
Keep your promise and be an honest person.
