The Old Man and the Sea is one of the masterpieces of American writer
Ernest Hemingway. It mainly tells the story of a Cuban fisherman and a
fisherman's family child Mandolin in the shore after careful planning
and preparation, the old man went out to sea alone and successfully
caught a 1500-pound marlin, but the old man in the fishing after the
journey back to meet all kinds of difficulties. With life and hope, the
old man persevered and struggled with difficulties, and finally made it
back to the shore. However, the 1,500 pounds of marlin was eaten by
other fish in the course of the old man's battle and was not brought
back to the shore completely. The old man only dragged a fishbone home
with a heavy heart... "There are enemies and friends in the
sea." The old man fishing back to the shore after a sentence said
this helpless and sore. Ernest Hemingway wrote this work in the early
1950s. In the 30 years from 1914 to 1945, human society suffered from
man-made disasters and severe psychological trauma. The world is like a
great ship that has lost its course and destination and is anchored in
the vast sea, in which human beings fight each other for interests and
resources, tear off the moral mask like a mirror, and openly rage
against each other. This moral mask in the reflection of the old
fisherman caught in the sea weight of 1500 pounds of marlin, became the
old fisherman in the sea sailing back to the hope and burden. The reason
why human beings are not consumed by various natural and man-made
disasters in the world is that there are always people who have a hot
heart and strong willpower, and there are always people who inherit it
just right. As for the Republic, it has become, ironically, the eternal
subject of mankind, for it has remained undiscovered and untouched by
man. In my opinion, those 80 days of thrilling fishing process is the
old man's "ideal country". This is because the whole process
fully shows the old man's perseverance and the strong and unyielding
struggle, and this quality is always remembered and followed by human
beings, which is the sufficient reason why the great ship of human
sailing will not stop because of the exhaustion and regret of an
"old fisherman". At the very least, when humans, experiencing
their last unpleasant journey, decide to sail on again, they know how to
avoid the one mako shark and the two star sharks, and they know exactly
how to fight them if they do encounter them, which is why the old
fisherman wants Mandolin to fall in love with the sea and the spirit of
fishing. Because the old fisherman knew he had failed once, as long as
Mandolin can prepare in advance, use the spirit of perseverance, and
arouse the willpower to fight, he will be able to catch the amazing
1,500 pounds of marlin again. "I missed you. Tell me what you
got?" The words the old fisherman asked Mandolin when he woke up
from his bed proved that the bright and warm Utopia still existed in the
old fisherman's heart, but he could not touch it. Mandolin’s excited
expression and eager action relieved the old fisherman, who knew that
Mandolin was sure to catch a big fish. Why didn't Hemingway let the old
man win in the end? In the words of the old man in the novel: "A
man is not born to be defeated", "a man can be destroyed, but
not defeated." This is the philosophy of The Old Man and the Sea.
There is no denying that all human beings have defects. When one
acknowledges this defect and tries to overcome it rather than submit to
it, it does not matter whether it is finally caught a complete marlin or
an empty skeleton, because the value of a person's life has been fully
reflected in the process of the hunt for marlin. Once for their own
ideal to pursue, struggle, isn't he a winner? The old fisherman is the
winner who dares to challenge his own defects and his own courage and
confidence. From the perspective of secular victory, the old fisherman
is not the final winner, because although he began to win over the big
marlin, but the final big marlin or let the shark eat, he just took the
big marlin skeleton back to the shore, that is to say, the shark is the
winner. However, in the eyes of the idealist, the old fisherman is the
winner, because he has not to the sea to the big marlin more no
compromise and surrender to the shark. As Beethoven said, "I can be
destroyed, but I cannot be conquered." Human nature is strong,
human itself has its own limits, but it is because of the old fisherman
such a person again and again to challenge the limits, beyond them, this
limit is expanded again and again, and again put a greater challenge in
front of human beings. In this sense, the old fisherman Sandhya brother
such a hero, whether they challenge the limit is successful or failure,
is worthy of our respect forever. Because, he brings us is the most
noble human confidence! Life is an endless pursuit. Its road is long,
difficult, and full of frustrations, but as long as they are brave and
tenacious with a confident heart to meet the challenge, he will always
be a real winner! Reading this, my heart is full of feelings. I think,
maybe Mandolin’s brilliant smile is the closest to the old man's ideal,
maybe the ideal does not exist, but if it is there, the ideal must be in
everyone's strong will.
