Chapter 3: The Liaison of Ideas It is obvious that there is a
principle of connection between the various thoughts or ideas of the
human heart, and that they lead to each other in a certain order and
rule when they appear in memory or imagination. This is most easily seen
in our more serious thoughts or talk, so that if any particular thought
breaks into the regular path or chain of ideas, it is immediately
noticed and rejected. It seems to me that there are only three
principles of connection between ideas, namely, Re-semblance,
ContiguityinTimeorPlace, and Cause or Effect.
