An educative book

梁家杰

A Study of Human Understanding embodies Hume's inheritance and development of English empiricism from Locke onwards. Russell, in his History of Western Philosophy, had the following to say about Hume. "He has developed the empiricist philosophy of Locke and Berkeley to its logical end; he represents a dead end; it is impossible to go further along his course." It was the book A Study of Human Understanding that woke Kant from his solipsistic ecstasy and thus indirectly led to the first turn in the history of Western philosophy - from solipsistic philosophy to critical philosophy - with its sharp skepticism.
