The Dubliners
Each story in"The Dubliners"takes place in Dublin City. At the time, it was the centre of Irish life and society. Insted of viewing Dublin in a lovely or sentimental way, Joyce sees it as a coercive force in the underlying humanity of the Irish population. Jorce believed that in Dublin socirty, there were two main powerful forces that caused spiritual paralysis, which was the Catholic and British ncolonial rule.He thinks these two forces prevent and supress all the underlying vitality in Irish life.Joyce created all kinds of characters in this collection, including adolescent boys, middle-aged alcohols, government staff, university lectures, laundry women, businessmen and so on, most of which belong to the middle class, a few belong to the working class. Their common characteristics are surprisingly dullness, and the absense of public obligation and private life.
He describes the insignificant daily lfe of ordinary Dubliners, but he deeply shows the fierce conflicts between various characters and the dead and paralyzed society and their painful mental feelings after their failure. It aslo brings us a deep understanding of the whole society.
