"This" teleology "is indeed a difficult one to accept.
But if we interpret his words as meaning that education is aimless, that
is clearly a misunderstanding. What Dewey really meant by
"education without purpose" is that education is meant to be a
healthy development of human nature and innate abilities, not to be
imparted into "containers" of knowledge. Only people, parents,
teachers have a purpose. What he's talking about here is inseparable
from the kind of democratic society he aspires to, and for him,
especially in the context of that time, he's reflecting an American
spirit that the development of the individual is the end in
