Pride and Prejudice is one of the representative works of Jane Austen,
published in 1813, which reflects the life and marriage views of the
English gentry class in the early 19th century. The background of the
novel mainly involves three aspects: social system, social class and the
concept of marriage. In terms of social system, the background of the
novel is the late period of the French Revolution to the late period of
the Napoleonic Wars. Britain is in a situation of war and turbulence,
and it is also the early period of the Industrial Revolution. The
militia in the novel was set up to defend against the French invasion,
and the impact of industrialization was mainly reflected in the northern
cities, which had little impact on the rural life in the novel. The
novel also reflects the limited inheritance system in England at that
time, that is, only men can inherit property and titles, which is a
great pressure for the Bennett family without a son, and also an
important motivation to promote the development of the plot. In terms of
social class, the novel mainly depicts the English gentry class, that
is, the middle and upper classes who own land and wealth. They have
strict rules of etiquette and hierarchy, and hold an attitude of
contempt and contempt for the poor and lowly. In terms of the concept of
marriage, the novel shows the different views and choices of different
characters on marriage. Some people believe that marriage is an economic
and social contract that should be based on wealth and status, such as
Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Collins, and Charlotte. Some people think that
marriage is a combination of feelings and reason, and should be based on
love and character, such as Elizabeth Bennett, Mr. Darcy, Jane Bennett,
Mr. Bingley, etc. Others, such as Lydia Bennett, believe that marriage
is the result of impulsiveness and indulgence, pursuing their desires
regardless of the consequences. The novel advocated an ideal concept of
marriage, that is, marriage should be for love rather than for wealth
and social status, although most of the British society at the time
tended to bind marriage and wealth. The novel begins with an ironic
remark: 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in
possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife'. I want to talk
about some thoughts on family, friendship, love and marriage, and
briefly about the individual and the environment, pride and prejudice.
"Pride and Prejudice" is a "love" story, which
interspersed with a lot of "novel" plot, But this is a
"true story" that happened in a small town in England at the
end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, vividly
reflecting the various love and hatred and family disputes between the
British aristocracy at that time. An era, in a "novel" slowly
temporarily open, let a person in the story at the same time, understand
the "wind" of an era, such a work, really "classic,"
let a person lead to endless aftertastes.
