The Time Machine is a novella by English writer Herbert George Wells
, first published in 1895. With its unique science fiction imagination
and profound social implication, this work has become a classic in the
history of science fiction literature. The story follows a scientist who
invents a time machine and travels to the future to the year 802701 to
witness the division of the human race into two rival races: the Eloi
and the Morlocks . The Etheloi were small and thin, unable to work, and
lived in the sun; The Morlocks, on the other hand, were fearsome and
strong, working all day and living underground. This social division not
only reflects the class antagonism of human society, but also implies
the possible negative impact of scientific and technological progress.
In this novel, Wells explores multiple themes such as time, history,
human civilization, and technological progress. He raises a
thought-provoking question: Is the progress of human society necessarily
accompanied by class divisions and social inequality? The future journey
of time travelers is not only a visual feast, but also a profound
reflection on the future of mankind.
