Hemingway once commented on the book "Huckleberry Finn" and
said, "All modern American literature comes from one book, Mark
Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Mark Twain's language
is humorous and witty, and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature and is
known as the "father of American literature. The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn is a classic literary work that leads readers into a
world full of adventure and challenges through vivid and interesting
narratives and delicate emotional descriptions. This work is not only a
sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but also a profound revelation
and critique of the reality of American society. After reading this
novel, I felt a lot about the author's deep concern for freedom,
equality, humanity, and social justice. The protagonist Huckleberry
lived in a very dark era - a time when white people dominated and black
people were slaves. This novel takes Huckleberry Finn's adventure as a
clue, looks at the essence through phenomena, and depicts the decay of
bourgeois life and the evil of slavery. Huck in the text said: I have
never had a home or gone to school like other boys. I sleep on the
streets or in the woods, and whenever I want to do something, I can do
what I want to do. This is truly a wonderful life. "This sentence
reflects Huck's deep sadness. Huckleberry had an alcoholic father who
often beat him after getting drunk. Later, Huckleberry ran away from
home because he couldn't stand his father's beatings and Douglas'
demands on him. He escaped to the Mississippi River, where he met Jim, a
black slave. After they met, they walked together. On the way, they
encountered two scammers who claimed to be "kings" and
"dukes". After these two swindlers did a lot of bad things,
they sold the black slave Jim behind Huckleberry's back. Huckleberry
tried his best to save Jim, and Huck took many actions to help Jim get
rid of his slave identity. During the rescue process, Huck met his good
friend Tom and worked together to successfully rescue Jim and restore
his freedom. The plot of this novel is compact and full of suspense,
making people feel nervous throughout the reading process. The author
vividly depicts the hardships and dangers that Huck and Jim faced during
their escape, making us feel as if we were there. At the same time, the
author also used contrast and exaggeration techniques to shape a rich
and colorful character image, making the entire story both vivid,
interesting, and philosophical. While reading this novel, I was moved by
Huck's kindness and bravery. Although he is just a child, he has the
courage and wisdom beyond his age. He always maintains calmness and
composure when facing difficulties and dangers, using his wisdom to
resolve crises. More importantly, I deeply admire his attitude towards
Jim. In that era of rampant racial discrimination, Huck did not
discriminate or exclude Jim because he was black. Instead, he formed a
deep friendship with him and stepped forward at critical moments to help
him gain freedom. This friendship that transcends race and identity has
shown me the brilliance and beauty of humanity. In addition to the
character Huck leaving a deep impression on me, the depiction of social
reality in the novel also greatly shocked me. The author vividly
portrays various issues in 19th century Southern American society, such
as racial discrimination, class differences, and social corruption,
through the adventurous journey of Huck and Jim. These phenomena are
fully reflected in the story. The author criticized these unreasonable
phenomena with sharp strokes and expressed his strong desire for social
justice. At the same time, the author also conveyed the concept of
equality and harmonious coexistence between everyone through the
friendship between Huck and Jim, which was particularly valuable and
rare in the social context at that time. While reading this novel, I
also experienced the author's strong longing for freedom. As a child who
yearned for freedom, Huck broke free from the constraints of his family
and society, and chose to wander and explore on the Mississippi River.
Although his choice was full of uncertainty and danger, it also made him
feel unprecedented freedom and happiness. As a slave who yearned for
freedom, Jim constantly pursued his dreams and freedom during his
escape. Their experience has made me deeply understand that freedom is
the most basic need and pursuit for each of us. Only by having freedom
can we truly realize our own value and dreams.
