The first chapter explores the formative reasons for Thoreau's
ecological ideas. Thoreau's experience in New York led to his aversion
to urban life. Witnessing the separation of humans from nature in the
city, he strengthened his transcendentalist belief that reform must
begin from within oneself, and that nature allows no shortcuts.
