The Great Gatsby profoundly reveals the tragedy of American society in the 1920s. Through depicting the process of Gatsby's pursuit of Daisy, the novel shows his pursuit of and misunderstanding about the American Dream. In order to win Daisy's heart, Gatsby didn't hesitate to sacrifice his emotions, abilities and wisdom, which eventually led to his own tragedy. This reflects the excessive pursuit of wealth and social status in the society at that time as well as people's misunderstanding of love and dreams.
