One of the most prominent themes in the book is the exploration of race
and slavery. Through Huck's eyes, we see the deep - seated racism of the
time. Huck's internal struggle about helping Jim, as he was taught that
aiding a slave was morally wrong, is heart - wrenching. This struggle
not only reflects Huck's growth but also forces the reader to confront
the hypocrisy of a society that claims to be civilized yet upholds such
inhumane practices. Moreover, the theme of freedom runs throughout the
story. Huck and Jim's journey on the raft symbolizes their pursuit of
freedom, away from the constraints and prejudices of the shore. Their
adventures show that true freedom is not just about physical escape but
also about the freedom to think and act according to one's own moral compass.
